2013 Annual Grant Awards Reach New Heights in Community Giving

2013 Awards Grand Total$1,434,000 was awarded at the 13th annual event held November 7th at the O’Shaughnessy Center. Awards ranged from $500 to $6,000 from the Foundation’s competitive grant program. This year 66 grants totaling over $182,000 were distributed from the Community Grants Fund. Funding for the Foundation’s Grants Programs comes from private donations, the annual Whitefish Duck Derby that raised $60,000 for grants this year, the Summer Art Social, and interest from the Foundation’s growing Permanent Endowment Fund.

The Foundation awarded a $25,000 Major Community Project Grant to Shepherd’s Hand Free Clinic to help launch a dental care outreach program this winter. This is the first time a Major Grant has been awarded at the Annual Grants Presentation and only the third time the Foundation has awarded a Major Grant. Meg Erickson, Director of Shepherd’s Hand was shocked with the announcement of the Major Grant Award which was announced right after she finished a special presentation highlighting the work of the Free Clinic.

The Iron Horse Foundation held by the Community Foundation awarded a $1 Million grant for the renovation and expansion of the physical education wing at the new High School. Murray Craven announced the grant award in a special presentation that highlighted the background on the funding award and that the new facility would be named in honor of Jim Campbell, the first general manager of the Iron Horse Golf Club.

An additional $227,000 was awarded from nine of the Foundation’s Donor-Advised Funds. Whitefish Mountain Resort Fund awarded over $20,000 in 32 grants to area nonprofits. CEO Dan Graves highlighted DREAM Adaptive Recreation and Hope Pregnancy Ministries as two of the many organizations it annually supports through the WMR fund.

New this year, the Foundation wanted to recognize the organizations that bring a number of their volunteers and board members to the event.  Midway through the grant awards the name of the Whitefish Lake Institute was drawn from a “hat” and was awarded a $500 instant grant.

Some organizations were awarded several grants from both the Community Grants Program and the Donor-Advised Funds. North Valley Food Bank received six grants totaling over $30,000. Programs that benefit the Whitefish School district received over $30,000 in grants to help fund projects in music, science, wellness, mental health counseling, meals and more. In all, almost 200 grants were awarded to 100 different nonprofit organizations.

Board President Carol Atkinson presented the Great Fish Award to the Stumptown Art Studio for their work on the Windows on Whitefish project. Melanie Drown and the Stumptown Board were presented the award that recognizes the value and service a local nonprofit provides to the community and comes with $1,000 grant.

Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation received the The Doris Schumm Community Spirit Award that also comes with a $1,000 grant. The award is selected each year by the Grants Committee with guidance from Surrey Schumm, Doris Schumm’s daughter. Previous recipients include Whitefish Lake Institute, Whitefish Legacy Partners and the Glacier Nordic Club.
