This year’s Downtown Whitefish Farmer’s Market has seen the premiere of the Nourish the Flathead Senior Coupon Program. This exciting program is built upon the organizations successful SNAP2 program which provides a $5 incentive for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefit recipients to use each time they use their SNAP benefits at the Farmer’s Market.  The Senior Coupon Program was made possible through a combination of private donations and a Community Grant from the Whitefish Community Foundation.

The program provides $40 in coupons for seniors to use at the Whitefish Farmers market throughout the 2013 market season. The coupons can be used to purchase fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, eggs, and plant starts from vendors at the market.  The benefits of this program are many for our community.  Seniors have increased access and incentive to purchase highly nutritious foods and the money they spend goes directly into the hands of hard working agricultural producers.  So far this season twenty five local seniors have accessed the coupon books and each market has seen an increase in interest about the program.  Taking into account feedback from this season’s participants Nourish the Flathead plans to expand the program next year to include pre made meals for seniors made of food sourced from the market.
