Doris
Schumm Community Spirit Award
In
November of 2009, we lost a beloved community member and
dear friend to so many, Doris Schumm.
Dorie was a great friend to many nonprofit organizations
in Whitefish where she donated countless hours and support
including the Whitefish Library, North Valley Food Bank
and the Whitefish Community Foundation.
The Community Foundation has been honored to receive a
bequest from Dorie who had the foresight to leave a gift
to the Foundation even before it existed. |
 |
She
was ahead of her time and had always felt that Whitefish should
have a Community Foundation. To
recognize Dorie and the wonderful community spirit she always
displayed, the Foundation will award one grant recipient each
year with the Doris Schumm Community Spirit Grant.
The Grants committee will select this award from the grant applications
that are submitted each year in June, and it will be presented
at the November Grant Awards evening. This special honor will
come with an additional $500 operational support grant. In memory
of Doris Schumm, her sister Carol and her brothers James and
David have contributed funding to increase the Doris Schumm
Community Spirit Award to $1000.
The 2010 recipient of the Doris Schumm Community Spirit Award
was the Whitefish Lake Institute, for the scientific research
and education they conduct on the Whitefish Lake. Run by Mike
Koopal, Executive Director and Chris Ruffatto, Environmental
Scientist, the Whitefish Lake Institute has adopted the mission:
The Whitefish Lake Institute is committed
to acquiring scientific research and engaging
the local citizenry to protect and improve the Whitefish area
lake resources of today,
while providing a collective vision for tomorrow.
