2010 A New Record in Giving

The Whitefish Community Foundation celebrated its ten year anniversary by setting a new record high in giving to local nonprofits. More then 250 people watched as over $240,000 was awarded at the annual Community Grants Presentation Event held November 4 at the O’Shaughnessy Center. 44 different nonprofits were awarded grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 from the Foundation’s Community Grants Fund, a competitive grant program. This year, the total distributed from the Fund was $100,000, up from $75,000 in 2009. Funding for the Community Grants Fund comes from private donations, the annual Whitefish Duck Derby that raised $35,000 for grants this year, the Summer Art Social, and interest from the Foundation’s Endowment Fund.

Some organizations were awarded several grants including the North Valley Food Bank receiving over $20,000 and Whitefish Schools which received over $25,000 to help fund projects in music, science, wellness programs, mental health counseling and more. Additional grants came from donor-advised giving funds held at the Foundation by individuals and businesses. The Foundation holds 14 donor-advised Funds and seven agency endowment funds. Board President Paul Johannsen stated, “Between the Foundation’s grant program and another $140,000 from our Donor-Advised Funds, over $240,000 was distributed tonight, an increase of over 15% from last year and a reflection of the great community in which we live.” In all over 116 grants were awarded to 73 different organizations.

Paul Johannsen was recognized at the event for his three years as Board President of the Foundation. During his term, Johannsen brought the Foundation to a new level of giving by embracing major changes and new fundraisers. This last year, Johannsen has focused on building the Foundation’s Permanent Endowment Fund which reached a record level of $1Million under his leadership.

Johannsen presented the Great Fish Award to Shepherd’s Hand Free Clinic and director Meg Erickson. The Great Fish Award recognizes the value and service a local nonprofit and its director and staff provide to the community. Previous recipients were DREAM Adaptive, Bruce Gibson; North Valley Food Bank, June Munski Feenan; and Whitefish Theatre Company, Carolyn Pitman.

A new annual award created from the bequest to the Foundation by Doris Schumm was also awarded at the event. The Doris Schumm Community Spirit Award which comes with a $1,000 grant was awarded to the Whitefish Lake Institute. Surrey Schumm presented the award to the Institute, an organization that works for a cause that was greatly valued by Doris Schumm. The 2010 event was also dedicated to the Memory of Schumm who served on the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Grants Committee for over eight years.
